Antique French Sampler

Sweet little hand-stitched blue and red antique French sampler - not in perfect condition - with small pulled threads and a small hole in lower right corner. This sampler is very old and very delicate - probably stitched by a young French girl.

The letter "W" is often missing from old French samplers because in the past, the French language did not regularly use the letter W often substituting it with a double V instead; therefore, when creating an alphabet on a sampler, the "W" was simply not included as it wasn't considered a standard letter in everyday French usage at that time.
